The key compound of black spruce essential oil is bornyl acetate, which usually shows in the range 18-27%. It is commonly considered that more bornyl acetate means higher quality oil. Also, α-pinene is one of the main monoterpenes found in this oil. Genuine spruce oils (including white spruce and black spruce, both found together in Canada’s boreal forest) also contain numerous small signature compounds which can separate them from other conifer: α-cadinol, oplopanone (as traces), α- and γ-campholenals, δ-cadinene as the main sesquiterpene and isoborneol and its acetate are all good markers.
